Viidessä Pennissä Helsingissä maistamani skottilaisen panimon Brew Dogin tuotos Dog A, joka etiketin tietojen mukaan on samaa stuffia kuin heidän aikaisempi olut AB:04. Tämä 15.1% imperial stout on lakritsinen, paahtunut, suklainen, kahvinen, mausteinen ja siitä löytyy kypsää hedelmääkin. Tämä on parasta nauttia ajan kanssa. Kaksi tuntia meni kevyesti pelkästään tätä siemaillessa. Hieno olut. Pisteet: tuoksu 9/10, ulkonäkö 4/5, maku 9/10, suutuntuma 5/5, yleiset pisteet: 18/20. Yhteensä: 45/50.

At Viisi Penniä Beerhouse in Helsinki I tasted this Brew Dog's fine brew: Dog A imperial stout which the label explains to be the same as their AB:04 release. This 15.1% stout has liquorice, burnt nose, chocolate, coffee, spices and ripe fruits. This is better to sip with time. Two hours went by easily just drinking this beer. Points: nose 9/10, appearance 4/5, taste and finish 9/10, palate 5/5, overall score 18/20. Total points: 45/50.

Real ale'a Kittysissä  (Real ale at Kitty's Pub)

Tulipa eilen käytyä Pennissä maistamassa muutamia oluita ja viskejä. Ilta alkoi Beer Hunter'sin Mufloni Säppi APA:lla, joka oli oikein mukavan humalainen ja kukkainen. Sitrusta ja hedelmääkin mukana sopivasti. Pisteet: 36/50. Tämän jälkeen maistui myös Brew Dogin Chaos Theory. Karamellia, hedelmää ja humalaa tuoksussa ja pähkinää, suolaisuutta, mallasta ja humalaa maussa. Tällekin pisteet 36/50. Sitten Roguen Old Crustacean Barleywine style'n kimppuun. Tuoksussa hedelmää, makeutta, vihanneksia ja hiivaa. Maussa mallasta, happamuutta ja samalla myös makeutta. Pisteet: 34/50. Viskeissä tuli maistettua paikallista erikoisuutta eli Penni Peated Malt. Tämän viskin pohjana on Smoky Joe ja sitä on lillutettu tynnyrissä, jossa on taas lillutettu Pedro Ximenes -sherryä. Kyllä Smoky Joe parani tämän ansiosta. Tuoksussa nahkaisuutta, parfyymiä ja savua. Maussa taasen lääkemäisyyttä, sherryä, savua ja toffeeta. Pisteet: 86/100. Sitten Bruichladdichin Octomore 4_167, joka oli hunajainen, suolainen, savuinen ja mausteinen viski. Bruichladdichiltä kans tulee näitä erilaisia viskejä kuin sieniä sateella. Hyviä kylläkin. Illan päätti Glenlivetin 18-vuotias viski. Tämän tislaamon 12-vuotias ei kuulu suosikkeihini, mutta tämä on kylläkin parempi. Hedelmäinen, makea ja hunajainen viski. Ei paskempi, kuten Porissa sanotaan. Pisteet: 86/100. Tänään sitten taas Kittysiin ja maistelemaan real ale'a. Hanassa olikin uusi tuttavuus eli Tring -panimo ja Bring Me Sunshine -olut. Kukkainen, hedelmäinen, humalainen olut. Real ale't ovat aina melkein järjestään hyviä oli hanassa sitten mitä tahansa. Tällekin pisteet 38/50. Otin kyytipojaksi vielä Auchentoshanin Valinchin, joka oli ihan mukava viski oluen kera. Omenainen tuoksu, jossa myöskin parfyymiä, konvehtia, konjakkkia ja kaakaota. Maussakin hedelmää, makeutta ja vaniljaa. Pisteet: 85/100.



I went to Viisi Penniä pub yesterday to taste few beers and whiskies. I started with Beer Hunter's Mufloni Säppi APA which was very nice beer with hops and floral aromas. It was also citric and fruity. Points: 36/50. After that I tasted Brew Dog's Chaos Theory. That too was great. Caramel, fruits and hops on the nose and nuts, vinegar and hops on the palate. Points: 36/50. Then Rogue's Old Crustacean Barleywine Style. Fruity, sweet, veggies and yeast on the nose and malts, sour and sweet on the palate. Points: 34/50. I also tasted some whiskies. I had local speciality called Penni Peated Malt. This is infact Smoky Joe that was finished inside Pedro Ximenes filled small barrel. Great finish. Leather, perfume and smoke on the nose and medicine, sherry, smoke and toffee on the palate. Points: 86/100. Then Bruichladdich's Octomore 4_167 which had honey, salt, smoke and spices. Points: 87/100. I ended the night with Glenlivet's 18 year old. The 12 year old isn't my favourite but this is better. Very fruity, sweet and honey-flavoured whisky. Points: 86/100. Today I went to Kitty's pub at the centre of Helsinki. I've always loved real ale and that's why I wanted to visit that pub. They had Tring brewery's Bring me sunshine -ale. Very nice like real ale's usually are. Floral, fruity and hoppy ale. Good for hot summer days. Points: 38/50. I had Auchentoshan Valinch on the side. Nice whisky for it. Apples, perfume, praline, cognac and cocoa on the nose and fruits, sweetness and vanilla on the palate. Points: 85/100.

Brew Dog - Sink The Bismarck

Finally I had the chance to taste this famous beer. I was at Kitty's (in Helsinki) last Monday when I noticed the bottle on the shelf. I got the last two cl's from it. Bottle had a BBE stamp 14-10-20 and it was from batch #010. Okay, then to the beer. 41% ABV! When I heard about this beer I thought that nobody could beat them but I was a wee bit wrong. The colour is cloudy brown so not very tempting. Lots of chocolate and floral aromas but also medicine and fruity scents, especially raisins. Then a sip and I tasted caramel, salt, spices and salmiac. Texture was syrupy and winey. Very full-bodied. I'm glad I bought this. Points: 30/50 (aroma 7/10, appearance 1/5, flavour and finish 7/10, palate 3/5, overall score 12/20).

Few drams @ Old Anchor (12 November 2011)

Och aye! Me and my wife spent some time this evening at Old Anchor and I was disappointed to see that during these few years the whisky collection had diminished from 75 to 25. So, Helsinki lost one Grade A whisky bar. The pub itself has a great nautical decoration and feeling. You have to visit there just at least for one dram.
I had Brew Dog's Christmas Ale "There Is No Santa" and Balblair 1992. I also had a bottle of Criminally Bad Elf and drams of Ardbeg Alligator and Auchentoshan 17 YO.  I have to admit that Criminally Bad Elf was better than I remembered when I first tasted it few years ago. I was perhaps having a bad mood day back then. Ardbeg and Balblair were okay but the winner of the evening was definitely Auchentoshan 17 YO. That was marvelously sweet and winey and fruity. It just coated my palate and I also tasted it after a while.  Och, gin A hae mair whusky, A widnae touch watter onymair.
