Viikonlopun maistelusaldo

Maanantaina on tiedossa TYHY-päivä, joten oli pakko päästä perjantaina ottamaan muutama rentouttava, jotta tuo edessä oleva arkiviikon aloitus unohtuisi taka-alalle. Black Door tällä kertaa osoitteena. Löytyyhän sieltä riiliäkin. Sillä oli hieno aloittaa viikonloppu. Kyseessä Dark Starin Revelation. Kuparinruskeassa oluessa oli tuhti vaahto ja sitä olisi pitempääkin ihaillut. Jano vain alkoi painaa päälle sen verran kovasti, että pakko oli ottaa hörppy. Tuoksussa ja maussa oli paljon humalaa ja hedelmää, joten kivan raikas olut oli kyseessä. Kokonaispisteet: 39/50.

Kyytipojaksi otin pari senttiä Highland Parkin Lokia.Tämä on 15 -vuotias pullote ja jatkoa viikinkiaiheisille viskeille HP:lla (The Valhalla Collection). Tuoksussa ja maussa on paljon suolaisuutta. Myös nahkaa ja savuakin löytyy vaniljan ja hedelmien täytteeksi. Pisteet: n22+t23+f22+b22 = 89/100.

 Sitten piti saada jotain vähän tuhdimpaa. Durhamin panimon Temptation Russian Stout siis pöytään. 10-volttinen stout kuulosti hyvältä ja ei se pettänyt. Musta olut kätki sisälleen paahteisuutta, lakritsaa, savuisuutta ja mausteita. Täyteläinen ja kermainenkin. Upea olut. Nämä tuhdit stoutit ovat aina hyviä. Pisteet: 40/50.

Viskissä siirryin uusimpaan Islay -saaren tislaamoon eli Kilchomaniin ja sen viimeisimmän pullotteen eli Loch Gorm'in kimppuun. Meri ja suolaisuus siis jatkuivat lasissa. Nahkaa ja laastaria unohtamatta. Täyteläinen viski, jossa pitkä savuinen ja suolainen jälkimaku. Löytyi sieltä kyllä vähän hedelmääkin taustalta. Tämän kanssa pystyi helposti kuvittelemaan itsensä meren rannalle. Pisteet: n23+t23+f22+b23 = 91/100.

Ja stoutin makuun kun pääsin, niin pakko jatkaa samalla eli kyseessä kaverin mukaan Porterhouse'n Plain Porter, mutta hän ei ollut varma asiasta. Tiskiltä pöytään on niin pitkä matka, että tuollainenkin tieto saattaa haihtua matkan varrella päästä :-) Paahteisuutta ja lakritsaa kuitenkin löytyi. Hieno olut tämäkin. Pisteet: 38/50.

Kolmas viski oli Gordon & MacPhailin pullottama Aberfeldy 1990/2010. Hedelmää ja tupakkaa tuoksussa ja maussa. Monesti nämä yksityisten pullottamat viskit ovat pettymyksiä, mutta ei todellakaan aina. Tämä on pienoinen pettymys. Yksipuolinen viski, jolle pisteet: n20+t20+f19+b19 = 78/100.

Kotimatkalla eksyin vielä Angleterreen maistamaan toista riiliä eli Sunny Republic'in Dorset Crossia. Mukava olut tämäkin illan päätteeksi. Pähkinäinen bitter saapi 34/50 pistettä.

Lauantaina sitten kotosalla maistoin innolla uutta Rekolan panimon tuotosta eli Munkintietä. Trappistit ovat lähellä sydäntäni, joten odotukset tätä olutta kohtaan oli korkealla.  Tuoksussa kyllä löytyi banaania ja hedelmää eli niitä tuoksuja, joita yleensä tummissa trappisteissakin on. Löysin sieltä muutakin eli mm. karamellia ja toffeetakin. Suutuntuma oli kevyempi kuin odotin, jopa pikkaisen vetinen. Ei nyt huippupisteitä saa, mutta ihan hyvät 33/50. Täyteläisempää saisi mielestäni olla, mutta silti kaikenkaikkiaan ei paskempi. Pitää silti ostaa ainakin yksi pullo kypsymään pidemmäksi aikaa. Maistellaan uudestaan vaikka sitten syksyllä.

Ruoan kanssa tuli maistettua Beer Here'n Helmuth The Dog, josta ei sen kummempaa. Vähän tylsähkö olut, joten ei sille 30/50 enempää voi antaa.

Highland Park 18 Years Old distilled in 1956

Beer Huntersissa Porissa tuli tilaisuus maistaa sellaistakin herkkua kuin Highland Park 18 Years old distilled in 1956. Sitä oli jäänyt pieni liru vielä pulloon ja pakkohan sitä oli maistaa. Sen verran sitä sai lasin pohjalle, että siitä jonkin sortin analyysejä ja pisteytyksiä pystyi tekemään. Tuoksussa oli paljon nahkaa ja myös parfyymiä. Tuoksu oli aika täyteläistä ja tuntui mukavalta nenässä. Maussa oli paljon hedelmää, hunajaa ja toffeeta. Keskipitkä jälkimaku toi esiin myös tuon nahkaisuuden. Tämä on siis 1970-luvun pullote (1974?), joten tällaisiin on aina pakko käydä kimppuun kuin sika limppuun, kun sellainen tulee eteen. Historian havinaa aina näissä pullotteissa. Hyvää, mutta ei se nyt mitään maailman parasta ollut :-)
Pisteet: tuoksu 23 + maku 22 + jälkimaku 21 + balanssi 22 = 88/100.

At Beer Hunters in Pori I had a chance of tasting this tasty dram: Highland Park 18 years old distilled in 1956. They had a small amount of it left on the bottle so I had to taste this. There was enough of it to make some kind of an analysis. After first sniff there were lots of leather in it. Also perfume. Very full and it felt good on the nose. On the palate I tasted fruits, honey and toffee. Medium long aftertaste brought that leather back again. This is a 1970's bottling (1974?) so whenever you have a chance of tasting these then go for it. You can see history go pass your eyes when you taste these old bottlings. It was good but it wasn't the best you've tasted :-)
Points: nose 23 + taste 22 + finish and aftertaste 21 + balance 22 = 88/100.

Uisge2012

How come 12 months go so fast? It was just like yesterday when the Uisge2011 was held at Gallows Bird. This time the whisky festivals were held at Vanha Ylioppilastalo at the centre of Helsinki. Pub environment was perhaps better when it comes to enjoy whisky but VY had more space inside and I assume there weren't any queues outside like last year. I did miss some really interesting items this time but all in all it's great that the powers behind this event had the enthuasism to organize this. Thank You and hope we see you next year.

Me and my wife tasted 14 different single malts (+ Tia tasted also Balvenie 21YO) and had a really great time. I even tore down the stand of Grant's - of course, this was an accident. Believe it or not. Excellent feeling and great that so many foreign whisky experts travelled to Finland just for this happening. Hopefully there will be Uisge2013...

Uisge2011 (12 February 2011)

Thanks to organizers and Gallows Bird (pub in the city of Espoo) for the first Finnish Whisky Festival. Marvelous happening. Lots of different single malt whiskies, including Finnish Old Buck and Teerenpeli. Also lots of Scottish distillery representatives there. I hope there will be Uisge2012 next year somewhere in Finland. I read that there were huge queues in the evening so perhaps a bigger place would suit better next year. But of course this first festival is just about learning. Next time the organizers will be wiser.

I started my Friday afternoon with Old Buck 4th release (6 years old). After that sherry version I notice this as quite different. Very vanilla flavoured. At least to my mouth. Not so good as the previous releases but still not bad at all. I gave 89 points to this. I also tasted that other Finnish distillery product: Teerenpeli 8 years old which was quite fruity with praline notes. Also toffee in the taste. Teerenpeli's whiskies are getting better as they get older. 89 points also to this and I have to say that this is the best Teerenpeli so far I've tasted. Next one was Glen Garioch 1991 (1991/2010) after a nice chat with Morrison-Bowmore's representative. This was very fruity whisky with oranges in the taste. Excellent whisky. And... also 89 points. But don't worry, the next whisky didn't get 89 points. This was Auchroisk 1999 by Duncan Taylor. Grassy, heathery, sweet, fruity and marmalade flavoured whisky. "Only" 84 points. This was the worst of the lot. And let's move on: Bruichladdich 1998 Oloroso and this was a step towards a better whisky. Very winey whisky, especially Madeira wine came to my mind. Sweet and winey aftertaste. 90 points. And the next one was the winner: Highland Park 30 Years Old. Marvelous winey, nutty, toffee and tobacco scented liquid with fruity, winey, salty, honey and spicy taste. Aftertaste was long, winey and fruity. And definitely doesn't need any drop of water innit. 93 points. I ended the whisky tasting with Bruichladdich's Octomore 3_152. Very peaty whisky indeed. What else can you say about it. Nevertheless the peat was overwhelming it still was enjoyable dram. Very dry aftertaste. You feel your throat's just drying. 90 points. Of course I also enjoyed real ale as Gallows Bird have two of that yummy yummy available. Now I drank Dark Star's Hophead and Acorn's Sovereign. Especially the latter was very nice ale.
All in all, I enjoyed this first whisky festival that was held in Finland. Hope we see next year.
