The Beatles Live at Hamburg 1962

Siitä tuli joulukuussa 50 vuotta kun Beatles esiintyi viimeisen kerran Hampurissa. Mielestäni siis se mielenkiintoisin aika Beatlesin historiassa. Se, miksi tämä viimeinen kerta on se historiallisin on, että noista joulukuun keikoista on olemassa nauhat, jotka on jo moneen kertaan julkaistu. Ted "Kingsize" Taylor (tai Barber en tiedä) pyysi lupaa äänittää Beatlesiä Hampurissa ja John, Paul, George tai Ringo antoi luvan, kunhan saisivat palkkion oluen muodossa. Hänellä oli kuitenkin ajatus, että tästä bändistä tulee vielä jotain suurta ja halusi siksi äänittää keikat. Sittemmin Taylor yritti myydä nauhoja Brian Epsteinille (olikohan vuonna 1965) sen jälkeen kun Beatleseista tuli maailmankuulu yhtye. Epstein tarjosi vain "pähkinöitä" hänelle nauhoista ja Taylor kieltäytyikin myymästä. Hyvä niin. Muuten olisivat aivan varmasti menneet silppuriin. Beatlesit itse eivät pitäneet äänityksen tasosta ja kävivät sittemmin vuosikausia oikeutta niitä vastaan - ja voittivat. Onneksi tätä ennen ne ovat nyt kaikkien omaisuutta. Mutta onkin hienoa kuunnella näitä äänityksiä ja huomata, että taustalla ei ole paria tuhatta kirkuvaa teinityttöä ja musasta ei kuulisi nuottiakaan. Beatles oli tuolloin tunnettu vain Hampurissa ja Liverpoolissa, joten biisien välillä kuuluukin vain taputuksia ja humalaisten saksalaisten örinöitä. Joskus ei sitäkään. Beatlet itse höpisivät niitä näitä biisien välillä ja myöhemmin Brian Epstein karsi tämän "pahan tavan" pois heidän keikoistaan. Muutenkin on hienoa kuunnella biisejä, joita Beatles ei sitten myöhemmin enää soittaneet (esim. Falling In Love Again, Red Sails In The Sunset ja Lend Me Your Comb). Tämä hetki oli myöskin Beatlesin vihoviimeinen, jolloin he pystyivät olemaan ns. omia itseään. Brian Epstein sittemmin karsi Beatlesin lavakäyttäytymisestä pois puheet, purkan jauhamisen, syömisen ja muut epäesteettiset jutut. Boring. Harmi, ettei Hampurin ajoista ole muita live-esiintymisiä tallennettu, mutta nämäkin nauhat olisivat siis voineet joutua Epsteinin silppuriin, joten pitää olla tyytyväinen, että edes nämä ovat jäljellä. On tietysti myös olemassa kesällä 1961 äänitetyt Featuring Tony Sheridan - nauhat olemassa, mutta ne eivät olleet liveäänityksiä. Hienoja silti. Alempana linkki aiempaan postaukseen:

Beatles - Live at Star-Club, Hamburg 1962

First thing is that I can't understand why The Beatles were so reluctant to see this recording to be released. They said it was crap. Well, I don't share their views. This is one helluva live recording. Not from the peak of their Hamburg period but from the last days of their fifth Hamburg visit. According to the notes this was compiled from Ted "Kingsize" Taylor's recordings from 25th to 31st December 1962. Just before the beatlemania hit the world. Very raw and powerful performance. Much better than the later Beatles live recordings. Oh, how I wish there would be more of those pre 1963 live recordings available.

No one knows the right setlists and what song was played on what day but that doesn't matter. Here's one list that claims to be close to real sets recorded:

PS. This is one of the most adored live shows I know. We bought vol 2 of the Pickwick series in 1979 and I've loved it since. I remember listening to this when I was a kid. Bloody hell. The best Beatles live show ever recorded. Thank you Adrian Barber & Ted "Kingsize" Taylor. These concerts show what the real Beatles was. Not the polished all-dressed up every mother-in-laws favourite son-in-laws. I want to hear more of this Beatles...
